| SVENGALI EFFECT
A question often
asked in regard to hypnosis is whether someone can be made to do something against his or her will. This has
been called the Svengali effect. Many people who have seen stage hypnotism at work, or seen films that include
hypnosis ask this question.
Even very recent
films and television shows inaccurately depict hypnosis. Because of these, many people balk at the notion of
being hypnotised in fear of allowing someone to take control of him or her or make them act foolishly or do
something they would later regret.
I recommend that
you NEVER ALLOW AN UNTRAINED PERSON TO USE HYPNOSIS WITH YOU. Even though as stated before research has shown
that people will follow only those hypnotic suggestions that are within their fundamental
interests.
Of course, many
examples exist demonstrating that subjects in deep hypnosis who are asked to do something against their own
fundamental “interests" will either ignore the command or, if pressed to comply, will simply ignore the
instruction and return to full conscious awareness.
Certainly, people
do not need to be in hypnosis to break the law or to harm other people, animals or property. Only in films,
television and in novels is hypnosis linked to such actions. It makes for interesting plots, but is just not
factual.
Finally there is
no relinquishing of your "willpower" with hypnosis, despite fiction to the contrary. You still understand what is
right for you and what is wrong. In fact just the opposite is true you gain
control.
